Acupuncture for Carpal Tunnel Syndrome: What to Consider

An explanation of carpal tunnel syndrome, other causes of wrist and hand pain, medical management and what to expect when discussing acupuncture at Coburg Chinese Medicine.

Hands gently holding another person's hand and wrist.

Carpal tunnel syndrome can be uncomfortable and disruptive, particularly when symptoms affect your sleep, work or everyday activities involving your hands. If you've been diagnosed with carpal tunnel syndrome, or you're experiencing wrist or hand symptoms that you think may be related to it, you might be looking into different ways of managing your health.

Wrist pain and hand discomfort can arise for several reasons, so understanding the cause is an important part of deciding how to manage your symptoms.

If you're considering acupuncture, you're welcome to arrange a consultation at Coburg Chinese Medicine to discuss your circumstances and what an appointment involves.

What is carpal tunnel syndrome?

Carpal tunnel syndrome occurs when the median nerve becomes compressed as it travels through a narrow passage in the wrist called the carpal tunnel. This nerve provides sensation to parts of the hand and helps control certain muscles around the thumb.

Unlike a muscle or tendon injury, carpal tunnel syndrome involves a nerve, which accounts for many of its characteristic symptoms.

Symptoms can develop gradually and may include:

  • Tingling or numbness in the thumb, index finger, middle finger and part of the ring finger.

  • Discomfort in the hand or wrist, sometimes extending into the forearm.

  • Symptoms that are more noticeable at night or upon waking.

  • Difficulty gripping or handling small objects.

  • Weakness in the hand, particularly if the condition progresses.

Some people notice symptoms while driving, using a phone or holding objects for extended periods. Others first become aware of the problem because their hands feel numb or uncomfortable during the night.

Other causes of wrist and hand pain

Not all wrist or hand pain is caused by carpal tunnel syndrome. The location and nature of your symptoms can offer useful clues about what may be happening.

Wrist sprains and strains are common examples. A sprain involves injury to the ligaments that support a joint, often following a fall, sudden twisting movement or sporting injury. A strain involves injury to a muscle or tendon. Both can cause pain and difficulty with everyday hand movements.

De Quervain's tenosynovitis affects the tendon sheaths on the thumb side of the wrist and commonly causes pain during gripping, lifting or thumb movement. Other forms of tendon irritation, sometimes described as wrist tendonitis, can also cause discomfort associated with particular movements or activities.

Arthritis affecting the wrist or base of the thumb may cause joint pain and stiffness, while nerve irritation elsewhere in the arm or neck can produce pain, tingling or altered sensation in the hand.

These distinctions matter because different conditions require different approaches to assessment and management.

Medical assessment and management

Management depends on the severity and duration of symptoms, along with whether there are signs of ongoing nerve compression.

Conventional approaches may include wrist splinting, adjustments to activities, hand therapy, medical treatment or surgery when clinically indicated.

If you've received a diagnosis, it's useful to understand the recommendations you've been given and the reasons behind them. If you haven't had an appropriate assessment, I may suggest following up with your GP as part of our consultation.

Considering acupuncture for carpal tunnel syndrome

People explore acupuncture for different reasons, including an interest in Chinese medicine or a wish to discuss complementary healthcare alongside their existing medical care.

During a consultation, I take time to understand your symptoms, medical history, any investigations you've undergone and the advice or treatment you've already received. We can discuss what acupuncture involves, its potential risks and limitations, and any questions you may have before deciding whether to proceed.

Whether acupuncture is appropriate to consider will depend on your individual circumstances.

When should you seek further medical advice?

Persistent numbness, increasing hand weakness, difficulty with fine movements or loss of muscle bulk around the base of the thumb should be assessed medically. Prolonged nerve compression can sometimes cause lasting damage.

A recent wrist injury involving significant swelling or persistent pain may also require assessment to exclude a fracture.

If your symptoms are changing or you're uncertain about their cause, your GP or another appropriate healthcare professional can help determine whether further investigation is needed.
