Looking for Acupuncture for Knee Pain in Melbourne?
Knee pain can affect everything from sport and exercise to walking, working and everyday mobility. At Coburg Chinese Medicine, I offer individual acupuncture consultations informed by 15 years of clinical experience, alongside practical advice and discussion of appropriate rehabilitation and other healthcare. Welcoming patients from Melbourne's northern suburbs.
Knee pain can make everyday life surprisingly difficult. Walking, climbing stairs, getting up from a chair, working or enjoying your usual activities can all become uncomfortable when your knee is painful or stiff.
Knee problems are among the musculoskeletal complaints I regularly see at Coburg Chinese Medicine. Over 15 years in clinical practice, I've worked with people experiencing knee pain for many different reasons, from sporting injuries and tendon problems to arthritis and longstanding joint discomfort.
The people I see range from active runners, walkers and gym-goers, and people whose work places physical demands on their knees, through to older people whose pain or reduced mobility makes everyday activities more difficult. Their circumstances can be very different, and so can the approach to their care.
I'm Michael Warren, a registered acupuncturist running an affordable, independently operated clinic in Coburg, welcoming people from Brunswick, Pascoe Vale, Fawkner and surrounding northern Melbourne suburbs. I provide individual, one-on-one consultations, taking the time to understand your circumstances and offer practical advice alongside acupuncture where appropriate.

What can cause knee pain?
Knee pain can arise for a variety of reasons, and understanding what's contributing to your symptoms is an important part of considering appropriate care.
Common presentations include:
Knee osteoarthritis: Joint pain and stiffness that can make walking, climbing stairs and everyday movement more difficult.
Patellofemoral pain: Discomfort around or behind the kneecap, sometimes associated with running, squatting or using stairs.
Tendon-related pain: Problems involving tendons around the knee, often associated with changes in activity or physical loading.
Meniscal and ligament injuries: Knee problems that can occur following twisting movements, sporting injuries or other trauma.
Some people experience pain after a clear injury, while others develop symptoms gradually. Findings on scans don't always explain the extent of someone's discomfort, and different knee problems can require different approaches.
Considering acupuncture for knee pain?
People often arrange an acupuncture consultation when knee pain is interfering with their mobility, independence, work or exercise.
My approach is to understand your particular circumstances and help you make informed decisions about your healthcare.
We'll discuss your symptoms, previous injuries, medical history and any treatment or investigations you've already had. An examination may help inform our discussion and identify whether further medical assessment is appropriate.
Treatment may involve traditional acupuncture or, where suitable, electroacupuncture, which uses a small electrical current between acupuncture needles. I'll explain the proposed approach, relevant precautions and what to expect before proceeding.
Practical advice suited to your circumstances
For someone who is active in sport or gym training, we might discuss temporarily reducing training loads, modifying an exercise programme or whether a knee sleeve or other support is appropriate during activity.
For someone with reduced mobility, the conversation may instead involve ways to make everyday movement more manageable, including appropriate supports or mobility aids. I encourage people to seek additional advice from a physiotherapist, occupational therapist or other relevant practitioner where needed.
We may also discuss any advice you've received about pain relief or anti-inflammatory medication from your GP or pharmacist.
As the sole practitioner, you'll see me throughout your care. There are no compulsory treatment packages, and we'll discuss an approach appropriate to your individual circumstances.

Exercise, strength and rehabilitation
I'm a strong advocate for maintaining physical activity and strength, while recognising that people's physical capabilities and healthcare needs vary considerably.
Depending on the condition, appropriately strengthening the quadriceps, hips and surrounding muscles can be an important part of developing the physical capacity needed for walking, climbing stairs and everyday activities.
For active people, the focus may be on adjusting training and gradually returning to running, gym work or sport. I've discussed this broader approach on my Sports Acupuncture and Sports Injuries page.
For someone who is older or has reduced mobility, the priority may be maintaining independence, finding manageable ways to move and remaining as active as their circumstances allow.
There isn't one exercise programme suitable for everyone. A physiotherapist or exercise physiologist can help develop an appropriate strengthening or rehabilitation programme when needed.
Acupuncture may be considered alongside appropriate exercise, rehabilitation and medical care rather than as a replacement for them.
Knee osteoarthritis and persistent pain
Osteoarthritis is one common cause of knee pain and stiffness, although knee discomfort can arise from many different conditions.
People with knee osteoarthritis may experience difficulty walking, using stairs or getting up after sitting. Management often includes education, appropriate exercise, strengthening and other healthcare suited to the individual.
For more detailed information, see my separate Acupuncture for Knee Osteoarthritis article.
For people dealing with longstanding or recurring discomfort, my Chronic Pain article discusses the wider experience of persistent pain.

Frequently asked questions
Can I have acupuncture for a recent knee injury?
That depends on the nature of the injury and your symptoms. Some injuries require medical assessment, imaging or rehabilitation before acupuncture is considered.
Can acupuncture be used alongside physiotherapy?
Acupuncture may be considered alongside physiotherapy or other healthcare, depending on your circumstances. We can discuss how it fits with the care you're already receiving.
Is knee pain always caused by arthritis?
No. Knee pain can involve tendons, the kneecap, ligaments, menisci and other structures. Different conditions may require different approaches.
How many acupuncture appointments will I need?
There isn't a standard number suitable for everyone. We'll discuss your circumstances and review the approach as needed.
When should knee pain be medically assessed?
Significant swelling or deformity after an injury, an inability to bear weight or difficulty moving the knee warrants prompt medical assessment.
A hot, swollen knee accompanied by fever or feeling unwell requires urgent medical assessment, as infection is one possible cause.
Persistent or worsening knee pain should also be discussed with an appropriate healthcare professional.
Research and clinical evidence
Research into acupuncture for knee pain has focused particularly on osteoarthritis. Some studies report improvements in pain or function, but the certainty of evidence varies and clinical guidelines differ in their recommendations. NICE advises against offering acupuncture for osteoarthritis, while other guidelines have made conditional recommendations.
These findings cannot automatically be applied to every cause of knee pain. Decisions about care should consider the individual condition, the evidence and other appropriate healthcare.
