Exploring Acupuncture for Pregnancy and Morning Sickness

Pregnant person holding belly

Pregnancy is a time of considerable physical and emotional change. Some people experience very few difficulties, while others find themselves managing nausea, disrupted sleep, back or pelvic discomfort, or the everyday demands of pregnancy.

People choose to explore acupuncture during pregnancy for different reasons. Some are interested in additional options for particular symptoms, while others would simply like to discuss Chinese medicine as part of their broader pregnancy care.

I'm Michael Warren, a registered acupuncturist with over 15 years of clinical experience. At Coburg Chinese Medicine, I offer individual consultations for people considering acupuncture during pregnancy.

My clinic is at 197 Sydney Road, Coburg, welcoming people from Brunswick, Pascoe Vale, Pascoe Vale South, Preston, Fawkner and surrounding northern Melbourne suburbs.

What happens at a pregnancy acupuncture consultation?

We'll begin by discussing your pregnancy, your reasons for attending and any concerns you'd like to raise.

I'll ask about your symptoms, medical history and the maternity care you're receiving. Depending on your circumstances, we might also discuss sleep, daily activities, stress, nausea or musculoskeletal discomfort.

I'll explain whether acupuncture is appropriate, what it would involve and any relevant precautions. You'll have the opportunity to ask questions and decide whether you'd like to proceed.

Your comfort is important, and I'll consider your stage of pregnancy and positioning needs during your appointment.

I encourage you to continue your regular maternity appointments with your GP, midwife or obstetrician. With your agreement, I'm happy to communicate with your other healthcare practitioners where useful.

As the sole practitioner at Coburg Chinese Medicine, you'll see me throughout your care. There are no compulsory treatment packages.

Morning sickness and pregnancy-related discomfort

People often enquire about acupuncture for pregnancy-related symptoms such as nausea and vomiting, commonly called morning sickness, as well as back, hip or pelvic discomfort.

Research suggests acupuncture may be able to assist with some pregnancy-related symptoms, including musculoskeletal pain and nausea, although findings vary and individual outcomes cannot be guaranteed.

During your consultation, we'll discuss your symptoms, medical history and existing maternity care to determine whether acupuncture may be appropriate for you.

Acupuncture and labour preparation

Some people enquire about acupuncture during the final weeks of pregnancy, including those considering acupuncture for labour induction.

Research into acupuncture for labour preparation and induction remains inconclusive, with benefits for the onset of labour not consistently demonstrated.

During your consultation, we'll discuss your individual circumstances, your existing maternity care and whether acupuncture may be appropriate for you.
