Acupuncture Needling Can Help Pain
In this video, the Acupuncture Now Foundation (ANF) addresses how acupuncture works. The research referenced in the video found that the acupuncture controls such as putting acupuncture needles in spots not regularly utilized for low back pain or tapping acupuncture points with toothpicks was also twice as successful as traditional care!
Acupuncture Not a Placebo
The ANF state that "Findings like these cause the small but determined group of acupuncture critics out there to proclaim acupuncture is only a placebo and so should not be used. Acupuncture is most certainly not placebo as its effective use in Veterinary medicine clearly shows". The ANF recommends the use of acupuncture for back pain not only because it considers it twice as effective as regular care but because they consider acupuncture to be safer than regular pharmaceutical management.
Research design for acupuncture may need to change
The ANF also holds the position that the use of sham acupuncture as a control is an ineffective control as even sham acupuncture has the potential to ellicit a therapeutic effect, and because of this may affect how the effectiveness of acupuncture for an intervention is interpreted.
